-: The next partial planetary alignment will occur in 2040, on September 8th for Mars, Mercury, Venus and Earth. As for total planetary alignment, according to doomsayers it's going to be somewhere in 2012. Most astronomists agree that it's not likely to happen any time before the sun goes tits up. In reality the terrestial planets are in a relatively dense cluster around the sun, while the outer planets are very, very far away (which is why Jupiter appears to be about the same size as Venus from Earth, even though Jupiter is a colossal beast and Venus is 4/5 of Earth's volume). tl;dr space is big but the person who made this was going for the artistic effect. anonymous: I could never calculate how long it would take these planets to align themselves, regardless of our suns lifespan. But if you just want to 'see' the planets aligned perfectly, enter "8.6e305" into the year. Any digit smaller than that won't work. (February 15, 2011, 12:46 am)
