For the beginning of the movie, he actually is a pretty nice fellow, albeit clumsy. What drives him to insanity and suicide by the middle of the movie, is that he himself gets treated like shit both by Hartman and the other recruits due to him being so lazy and clumsy, which the drill instructor takes out on the whole group.

the only reason he did not kill the other guy was cause he was his only friend there and thats why one could say he was saved from leonards insanity. kinda touching and sad scene/story infact.
