feedback for dagobah flash gallery

cleanup and a new player page!

The biggest protests against the new layout have already been said and it's time to clean the feedback page a bit. Link to the old comments (mostly against the new layout) can be found from the right menu.

We've published a new player page for flashes, it's more streamlined than the previous version.
We hope you enjoy it.

Now I don't know if this is feasible, but with tags like "from rejected" and others, it's getting quite crammed on the small space to display tags on front page. I'd suggest keeping only the general tags such as anime, loop and game in the tag field, and making new fields for video and music sources. Meta tags that would only show on comments page could be useful too, for other information.

Hello,
at first, I am sorry for my bad English, but I hope that you can understand what I am trying to tell you.

I've read your history for a few minutes and I conclude that the history of my little website is similar to your history. (there are some differences (for example I am working still alone))

I am happy, that you could made this brilliant website. But unfortunately there are some problems I have with this layout. The layout is great, but the font color in the input and textarea fields is a little bit too dark I think, because I've some problems to read it.

My next problem is, that browsing with the keyboard is very bad in games. In 4 from 10 Tries, I get an other flash by typing an arrow key. This is, because I have to click on the flash window after I've opened the flash, but most of the time I forget it. (Maybe you can use a short script, which says, that browsing while gaming isn't possible. Or better, people can disable the browsing function)

After a lot of problems, I have two things, what you can change. If you hide the advertise, the flash will be on the left side. Thats not bad, but if you play flashes with width and height < = 400px, it looks very bad on wide-screen monitors. Maybe you can center the flashes. It will have a better look.

I concluded, that the warning for people with light sensitive epilepsy is missing now. I think it's better if you write down this warning again. (just in case)

Thats it. I visit your Website daily since summer 2008 and I am looking forward for new flashes today.

it's me again.
After I've read some comments, I think, it would be nice if dagobah have a private message system.

So the users can directly answer questions or do something whatever they want without a lot of other comments between their messages.

This function doesn't need so much storage space in the database and is easy to write. Maybe you can automatically delete messages which are older then 100 days for use as less storage space as possible.

Comments and questions should be for flash-files. Therefore the answers should also be there for everyone to read. Also we are not interested in to make any "community" site.

All the information that has been posted would be gone and all the same questions would have to been asked again! That would be just stupid. If you haven't notice, this site is more like an archive.

be able to search the comments? for example to search a band you know is featured in a flash. BUT you don't know the flashe name. so you search band name among the comments and maybe get a hit.

I'm realy grateful for the "intergalactig afterski" favorites section. But why does it only allow 2 sites of favorites? I have a lot of flash here i realy like, but i'm tired of always forgetting on which page they were, or the name for searching those.

I'd say no for the approval section, there's quite a large amount of malicious flashes or just hard porn.

For the approval time - They do get approved quite quickly, it just takes time for them to be shown on the site as we only release 4-5 flashes per day.

The page numbers are shown after "first page". There you can select a page where to go.

I really love the ability to gather favorites, and I got little over a hundred of them now. One thing I still miss though would be ability to get random favorite. The normal flash browsing interface is awesome though, so... If I could set the filter to favorites and use it to browse them. I could then for example set it to "#favorites loop", and get new random favorite loops with just pressing up key.

If you've uploaded a flash that hasn't been released yet, you can always go check the disapproved section. If it's not there, then it's either approved, pending or deleted (this happens to flashes that are complete junk (f. ex. just a song or a random image), too offensive or deemed dangerous (redirecting stuff))

I don't really see the problem in uploading ponycrap as long as it doesn't constitute the majority of the batch. They seems to score pretty decent on average. If you take issues with the source itself that's your problem, not the site's.

Can you tell me your browser version?

The reason for that behavior is "known" issue. Still if the browser is working correctly it shouldn't happen. :-(

Also make sure you are allowing javascript.

Weird, I can't see anyone else mentioning this in the feedback log, but both me and my girlfriend can't scroll down on the frontpage of dagobah.net when we're using Chrome. It keeps jumping back to the top of the screen automatically, so we can't really scroll down at all.
Works fine with IE, but who still uses IE? :[

Some of the flash files here are broken, so it would be a good idea to remove them if they are not fixable.

For other people who are whining here:
Some people here doesn't understand that this site is a hobby and we all (admins/mods) have also other things to do in our lives. I have a (new) job and without the moderators you wouldn't even get the new flashes. It's thanks to them that we have such a fast and continuous upload flow.

Hobbies are meant to be fun so if you have positive and/or constructive feedback, we are happy to hear them. Whining about every minor problem doesn't help anyone. Just relax, it's not so serious. :-D

We do not support sending only youtube videos. At least for now there needs to be flash file that is uploaded and then we can add "quality upgrade" with youtube.

So even if the youtube video is removed, we got the lower quality flash as a backup. ;-)

I can not post a comment with the message "thanks" to Blackoutamv.swf because of dublicate entry.

I never wrote that before and nobody posted it to this flash, so I think it was written to an other flash by a diffrent user.

Is it a bug, that it does not check the user who wrote it, or is it a feature for preventing spam with multiple accounts? It is easy for me to write something else, but I am a little curious about it.

We're replacing broken flashs with youtube alternatives. If you find broken flashs, please post them here on the feedback page so we can try to find a good yt alternative.
for example, sdm_run.swf and k-on_harmonica.swf have been fixed this way.

IMPORTANT:
- broken flashs are those who simply won't load. (for example, the flash area stays gray for me even after page loading finished).
- post the full swf name OR the full URL to a flash that needs fixing
- working flashs with converted video content won't be replaced when posted here. it might happen but not necessarily will.

I have a suggestion to add to troublehooting.
Many people using firefox are annoyed because the flsh players volume keeps resetting to 100%.
There are solutions: change to older flash player, OR:
Control panel -> audio -> [your audio device] proprties -> advanced -> untick "allow exclusive usage" or similar.

This might make the life of some people, and their ears, easier.

Idra: Some flashes won't work from local computer so there's nothing we can do for that. That particular flash should work though. No problem in download for me. :-)

Furryshroom: install flash. Easier said than done. For android there's old version available but it's kind of no-go for mobile. That's also reason we have not done any optimization to mobile browsers.

As you have noticed the site has been down since 11.3. :oops:

Well the problems started when our server provider decided to upgrade their network configuration (routers?). Our servers networking stopped working and it took few days to investigate why.

Then I tried to fix things but since I did not have enought knowledge I ended up breaking more than fixing. Well, shit!

Ok, I have always possibility to go to rescue mode but since I was not sure what I had broke I decided to buy a new server. Installation in 24 hours and cheaper than the old. Sounds good.

25 hours later... still no server. :-(

~30 hours later I got the new server and started moving the data. That works fine.

Since we run multiple virtual servers and have different IPs I ordered more IPs... nope. I was not able to get more than one! WTF?!? Ticket to server provider. they said the problem is in my end. Nope, it's not. Screenshot of internal server error 500 to them and then they believed.

Few days later they told me that there was not enough IPv4 on their pool and they were trying to get more.. WTF!!!

Ok I got few IPs that was released by other customers (?). Started to bring up the site. ... "why it's not working???" Well do you know what? The server provider had assigned me new IPs but routing to my server was not working. AAARRGGH!

Many days of fighting and tickets... they were still not able to get me my IPs. Quote from server provider support:
"As our network department is out of office for the rest of this week, I can not give you a solid ETA on this.
They will be back after the easter weekend and look into this case with highest priority.
We appreciate your patient and would like to apologize for the delay.
"

WHAT THE ( ... )!?!

Ok now I got the old server working. I'm going to migrate it to new server later to reduce costs. Currently our server is costing me more than I get from the ads. :(

Anyway. The site is back! Let's keep it that way! :-D

Downtime announcements can be found from our facebook page. Nothing automatic but I'll write there if there's some bigger going on. Two latest downtimes were caused by one missing parameter on automatic update and now it should be fixed. There will be small downtime coming when we get the new server working.

Doomoo:
You can upload the flash (.swf) and add comment with youtube tag (v=something). When moderators add the flash to the site, they can add the youtube linking to the flash and the content is then loaded from youtube (if user has not blocked youtube). You still need the real .swf file so that we can keep the file even if the youtube is taken down.

We have had really strange problems with the servers and finally the servers were unable to connect to anything. Restart got into bootloop and recovery did not work. :/

Luckily BIOS update helped and we got everything working again. Made some upgrades (that were previously impossibru!) and some other stuff behind the scenes. Some problems still exist and I have to get them fixed... but not today. B-)

There's no such file and never has been. I cannot find anything with "sphinx" or even when searching with "death note". There's no such flash on this site.

So you really don't have any clue what happens to your website, and that has been going on for at least a year: http://dagobah.net/flash/luckyloop.swf/comments

I guess next thing you tell me is that there is no backups for Dagobah, it doesn't have any fail-aware storage (RAID), and no one ever thought of making checksums of files to ensure their integrity.

We have backups, raid1 and checksums. Let me see what is going on with that flash... and that's a really good question. It seems that there is indeed some problems with database. The file exist on the filesystem but the entry is missing in DB. I have a clue where to look for it (old buggy code from 10 years ago...)

Well actually a LOT of flashes disappeared, I believe it was by the time of the server BIOS update (my memory is probably wrong, it was a while ago).
Before that there were ~13000 files, that number dropped to under 11000 after that. I know that for sure, as I remember "12345 flashes" post in the news section a while before the problems.
