So, I thought: "No way, this can't be right."
But... I succeeded in proving myself wrong, by recreating the slowed down sound using Audacity.
Didn't replicate it entirely, but if you take the mushroom powerup sound, slow it down by about 87% and then pitch shift it upwards by around 270%, you'll get a result good enough to know that it's legit.

Huzzah! It's almost like I'm doing science! What with a repeatable experiment and a report on my findings!

Well, I'm off to cure death with my newfound scientific prowess.

I did the same thing as #5, didn't sound exactly the same way, but yeah, it sounds about right.

My mind wasn't really blown, but its pretty cool.
