#6 - Jaska - 11/27/2009 - 18:28
So, they're using Japanese phonemes to make a Finnish song, right? How does that sound to a Finn?
#7 - Tioni - 11/27/2009 - 18:39
sounds a lot like an average immigrant with a decent-to-good grasp of the language would (if they were a robot)
#8 - Anonymous - 11/27/2009 - 18:42
Japanese phonetics can create (almost) perfect Finnish sentences. IMO that sounded quite good for vocaloid robotic sound.
#9 - Yani - 11/27/2009 - 19:07
Japanese and Finnish languages have very similar phonemes. I had a japanese university teacher who suspected that our languages had some common base. After all, they say finnish language speakers migrated from east to current Finland. The language sciences do not however acknowledge any such connection.
#10 - Anonymous - 11/27/2009 - 19:15
Errr, wait what? Don't know if want.
#11 - ab - 11/27/2009 - 19:42

#10:

Linguistics doesn't hold that Japanese and the Uralic languages are related for very good reasons. Two languages can be very similar, yet completely unrelated.

Japanese is usually held to be a language isolate (with Ryuukyuuan), which means no other languages are known to be related to it.

Why do Finnish and Japanese sound similar and have similar-looking words? Well, there are some reasons beyond "coincidence". One is that coincidences are bound to happen. Second is that both Finnish and Japanese have relatively small phonemic inventories. In the languages of the world, there are sounds that are near universal (/p t k n s/ etc), which are very likely to found in a language, and there are sounds which are probably found in a language, etc. So if two languages have small phonemic inventories, it is very likely that a sizeable majority of those phonemes will be identical or near-identical.

i just vomited
#17 - barf - 11/28/2009 - 01:25
The song is pretty much fully understandable... I doubt that the Japanese language and the Finnish language are related, but still they sound similar. In fact typing a Japanese word as its heard is pretty much correctly typed when from a Finnish person..
#18 - Anoni - 11/28/2009 - 01:47
I just realised how much I love our national anthem

Explain how Finnish, Hungarian and Mongolian are very similar?

Language science offer no answer.
History offers all answers.

Mongols invaded Europe in our early middle age.
The strongest groups of people contained their language culture. Germanic, Slavonic, Romanic.
Finland seems to have been populated by some mongolian people from a looong loooong time ago. Vikings never went to Finland.. Ruskies didn't either have plans for an expidition into the Finnish wilderness.

That's how language groups spread kids. Sometimes by random chance and preservation. Sometimes by crusades and conquest.
#32 - Dakka - 12/02/2009 - 00:34
