I built the exact same thing in MC Alpha, was hoping to find the end of the world (hoping that the world looped so that you could connect the rail and drive a cart around the world).

Unfortunately, the world is "infinitely" big.
"The game world is procedurally generated as the player explores it, with the full size possible stretching out to be nearly eight times the surface area of the Earth before running into technical limits."
